Social Network Platform

What It Is and Why You Need One

By Tasha Turner

What is a Social Network Platform?

Think of it as your virtual house. Thank you to DeAnna Troupe for this analogy.

It is made up of all the places you might be online:

  • Blog (main house)
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Website/blog
  • Google+
  • Pinterest
  • LiveJournal
  • Glue
  • Instagram
  • And more

Why do you want a Platform?

  • To build relationships
  • To have followers
  • To sell books, other products, or services

Is being on a Social Network Automatically Networking?

  • No it could be wasting time
  • No it could be having fun
  • No it could be play time

None of the above is necessarily bad just keep in mind that it is NOT networking. Networking is only happening when you are interacting with your target market or others who will help you reach your target market.

Networking – Who to Reach?

  • Authors/others in your business
  • Readers / others that will buy your product / service
  • Others who might share your blog/product/service with your target market

When might you want to network with others in your business?

  • Make contacts
  • Collaborate on projects
  • Learn from each other

Your Target Market

  • Know who your target market is:
    • o Income
    • o Age range
    • o Education level
    • o Generally married/single/kids
    • o What do they do with their leisure time
    • o What are their worries
    • o What social networks are they most likely to be on

You need to know the above to make sure you pick the right social networks to be on. You also need to make sure you are blogging and talking about topics of interest to them. You need to make sure your language is appropriate to your audience. You don’t want to be talking down to them but you also don’t want to be talking below their level.

What steps can you take to reach your target market using social networking?

  • Blogging – topics that are appropriate to your target market
  • FB – what to talk about/share
  • Twitter – what to talk about/share

What do you want from your Followers?

  • For them to share your blog
  • To suggest people follow you
  • For them to spread word of mouth about your book/product/service
  • For them to buy your product/service

What Don’t you want to do when Networking?

  • Spam people
    • o Don’t send out tweets about your product every 15-60 minutes
    • o Don’t post messages on your wall about your product constantly
    • o On FB don’t post the same thing in a number of groups all at the same time – it shows on your wall and annoys your friends and many of the same people are in the groups with you so it annoys them to and you start being ignored
  • Make your 1st contact about you
    • o Your 1st post should not be “hi thanks for friending/following me check out my page/website/book” – this immediately turns people off – instead ask about them or just say thanks for friending/following
  • Make most of your contact about you
    • o This is just beyond tacky– you may think you are the best thing to come along since sliced bread but frankly since I don’t know you from a jack and it is your job to initiate contact and get to know the other person – share information that might be of interest to the person based on their profile and their wall.

Rules to Follow

  • 80/20 80% of what you should post should not be about you it should be something of interest to your followers and/or helping promote others
  • Do not argue with critics– learn to ignore them – do NOT vent about them anywhere publicly this could lead to the destruction of your career
  • Be able to describe your book/product/service using a few quick/short sentences. write them down/practice them so you can say them in your sleep but don’t sound like you are bored when you are talking about them to people .
  • You need a blog/website –geared towards your target market, blog regularly (same days of the week)
  • Pick 2 other social network tools in addition to your blog and focus on those for your platform – more than 2 and you cannot give them the attention you need
  • Be aware of when you are networking and when you are hanging with your friends
  • Set a schedule for various things – writing time, networking time, socializing time, family time, chores time, “me” time. It may take a few months of playing with the schedule until you find one that works for you.

What do You Think?

  • Do you agree or disagree with this
  • How is your platform going?
  • What have you found easy to do?
  • What do you find difficult to do?

great post. Social network is overwhelming.

It can be. The more you know about what you are doing and why combined with limiting your time the less overwhelming it should be.

The part of this post I enjoyed the most was learning that 3 forms of social networking were enough! I’ve sort of got 3 so I’m going to go to bed happy. :)
